The post it note project began in the fall of 2020 during the transitional period from COVID-19 isolation to in person/hybrid. I developed this project at my school in a shared space in the school. The project began by distributing post it notes to students. facility, and community members asking them to write a positive message or “words of encouragement” on the post it.
I received nearly 1500 responses. The next step in this project was collaging these post its in addition to other blank ones in an organic and flowing pattern throughout the space. The project evolved over the course of several weeks. Students regularly used the space and could observe the growth of the piece as well as read the messages as they came in.
Once the project grew to a significant portion of the space, I then passed the project back to the people. I had a sign outside the project that invited students and faculty to continue to add to the project as the installation grew.
The project stayed up for a good portion of the school year and received great feedback from students, staff, anda community. At it’s peak, the project covered the main column of the space and extended into the floor, ceiling, and empty space off the walls as well.
