In the basement of Saint Ignatius High School, young men train with Coach Anthony Rubino and Coach AJ Short. And any Ignatian who’s been down there, knows that this place is special-its more than just a weight room.
In the middle of my senior year at St. Ignatius High School, Coach Rubino asked me to design and create a mural for the school’s weight room. Ultimately, the design embodies what Ignatius and its strength program stands for – the Grad at Grad (Loving, Religious, Open to Growth, Committed to Peace and Justice, and Intellectually Competent), a commitment to one’s passions, a commitment to the school and the city, and the determination to work hard together for each other.
I completed the mural over winter break between 2020 and 2021. It’s been an honor to create something meaningful in a place that means so much to me. My hope is that the artwork will stand as a motivator for generations of young men to come that they may strive for the same values as the generations of the past.
