My name is Joseph (Joe) Richmond and I am an artist from Cleveland, Ohio working in both the Cleveland and Columbus areas.
I have a passion for the interconnectedness of humanity, the dignity individuals, and the connection between humans, biology, and technology. I have created portfolios about homelessness, urban resilience, community connection, and biologically inspired designs amongst other projects. I am currently directing my work to combine my interests in mechanical/software engineering, art and design, and human interaction in a field of interactive media arts.
Please see my artist statement below to get a sense of my direction. Please also explore this portfolio website as an through the projects page and get in contact with me to chat more!
Artist Statement
In my work I seek to highlight the unseen and the silenced. I seek to create artworks and installations that enhance and encourage inclusiveness, understanding, and connectivity—to other humans, communities, environments, organisms.
I do not focus on one medium, and instead emphasize the interplay of mixed media through found objects, textural elements, technology, etc. My passion is in creating community. I choose to do so both by creating settings that physically enhance an experience of community via installation, interactive media, and conceptual experiences but also by creating works that include abstractions of people and ideas often seen on the outskirts of community in hopes of highlighting their significance. In other words, I create artworks and experiences to develop connections through the viewer–at times in viewing/experiencing the artwork itself, and other times in the way I hope my art makes one think and consider.
I consider myself primarily a public artist, focusing on outward facing projects via mural commissions, interactive media/installation, etc. I also do gallery work and commissions of various media incorporating elements of texture, material, and concept.
I believe that art, and especially the crossover of art and technology, have the power to connect people in compelling way, shine a light on the unseen, and synthesize authenticity and I seek to have these effects in my work
